“USA update 2022 – A house divided” by Dr. Markus Hünemörder (LMU, Munich)

When Joe Biden took office as the 46th US president, he vowed to bring back unity to a deeply divided country and do "great things". Nearly two years have passed since then. Time to take a look at what progress President Biden has made and at his standing with the American public. Time to welcome Dr. Markus Hünemörder, a lecturer at the LMU and renowned specialist on U.S. politics and political culture.

In his talk, Dr. Hünemörder explained where the United States and the Biden administration stand in this time of rising challenges to democracy. Together we looked at central topics of American politics such as the current make-up of Congress, the upcoming midterm elections, the campaigns of the two political parties, the Democrats and the Republicans, as well as the social division and the political polarization of the country. As usual, Dr. Hünemörder used a lot of humor and satirical political references to explain the country’s perennial issues like social and racial injustice or immigration.

This lecture was truly informative for students and teachers alike with Dr. Hünemörder being again an inspiring and wonderfully entertaining speaker.
